Re-visiting measurement

Values are goals that motivate people’s action and thought. They are thus central to how humans interact with each other and cope with personal and societal challenges. Values can explain for instance, why certain people are motivated by success while others are motivated by a sense of otherness. The presentation of Dr. Adrian Stanciu (GESIS) introduces the concept of values and describes theories that inform their measurement in Germany.

Abstract
Using ALLBUS as an example, I present findings from existing data and discuss why it is a necessary exercise to periodically re-visit measurement, particularly in surveys that monitor societal aspects over a very long period. Oftentimes such surveys had their onset decades ago, when measurement of certain constructs such as values were in their incipient phases. The talk addresses the issue of finding a balance between measuring values in a valid and reliable manner over a very long period and maintaining continuity in observing them during said period as well as explaining their effects on personal and societal phenomena. I will present the efforts currently being made in the ALLBUS program towards resolving this challenge, namely a study that is set to equivalate older with newer value measurement.

Speaker
Dr. Adrian Stanciu is a postdoctoral researcher in Team ALLBUS at GESIS in Mannheim and a guest researcher at the department of Psychology and Methods at Jacobs University Bremen. Dr. Stanciu received his doctoral degree in Psychology, but he also holds degrees in Sociology and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Stanciu is active in the research field of on human values, cross-cultural topics, as well as he develops with local and international colleagues a research program on improving research practices in social sciences.
