The urge to define practical research in design stems from the fact that every design process requires and involves interrogation, exploration, and research. Therefore, when faced with the practice of academia, the need to structure and define research processes has led the designer Deganit Stern Schocken and the architect Ayelet Karmon to reexamine some conventions of their own practice. Their personal and separate experiences as academic researchers working in different design fields (jewellery, textile, architecture, computation) at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan/Israel will let them illustrate questions on the true meaning of idioms such as human-centered design, design by making, design context and impact, agency by design and maker-centered approach to learning. Thus, the talk will focus on shared thoughts about research in design and its development in recent years – particularly with regard to applied practical explorations.
