Info on the duties and work of student representative organizations.

Students enrolled at a university constitute a student body. This is recognized as a legal entity within the university, an entity that governs its own affairs. Among these affairs are the interests of the group and the exercise of specialized, academic, social, and cultural interests of significance to members, the taking of positions on questions of policy, the promotion of student sports, and the care of regional and international ties. To carry out its duties, the student body receives a portion of the semester tuition fees.

The administrative organs of the student body are the Student Parliament (SP) and the Students’ Union Excecutive Committee (AStA). Besides these two, numerous other institutional structures have evolved in practice. There are somewhat similar institutional structures at the faculty and departmental level (departmental representation and the faculty council). Even so, often there are other organizational forms (plenary assemblies, councils of spokesman etc).

The Student Parliament is the highest decision-making organization within the student body. Elections are held annually. At this time, each and every student has the opportunity – by voting – to influence the (university) policy agenda over the coming years or even, by becoming a candidate on the party list of a university group (or as an individual candidate) to personally influence the direction of university policy.

The Students’ Union Excecutive Committee represents the student body, carries out resolutions of the SP, and takes care of the business of the current administration.
