What a brain wants…
Pint of Science:
- Do I really need to sleep?
Mihaela Anca Corbu, Doktorandin am Max-Planck-Institut für Stoffwechselforschung
There’s a lot we don’t know about sleep. Questions like why we have sleep cycles, why we dream and why humans even need sleep in the first place are ones scientists are still finding exact answers to. But one thing’s for certain: when we sleep, and sleep well, we feel better physically and mentally, and perform better during the day. During her talk Anca will explain some of the things we do know about sleep and why it’s so important for our bodies and minds. - Sex, Drugs and Rock’n’Roll: desire and pleasure in the brain
Vasyl Mykytiuk (Doktorand am Max-Planck-Institut für Stoffwechselforschung)
Why do we like sex, tasty food or good music? There is a special system in the brain which makes us to want and like these things!
When this reward system is healthy we feel good, full of energy and complete, but when it fails (as after taking drugs), we are not capable to control our actions. Vasyl will tell you how reward system works, gets hijacked by drugs and affects our everyday choices and preferences.
